An Appliance Maintenance Checklist for Las Vegas Homes

A few quick tasks can prevent many of the repairs we see. Las Vegas adds its own challenges: hard water, desert dust and 115°F summers. Here is a checklist you can actually keep up with.

Every load or week

• Dryer: clean the lint screen after every load.
• Garbage disposal: run cold water while you use it, and avoid bones, fibrous scraps and grease.

Every month

• Dishwasher: rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub.
• Refrigerator: check the door seals for gaps, and make sure nothing blocks the vents inside.
• Water softener (if you have one): check the salt level.

Twice a year

• Refrigerator coils: unplug it and vacuum the condenser coils. Desert dust builds up fast, and dirty coils make the compressor work harder.
• Washer: wipe the door seal on a front-load washer, and clean the pump filter.
• Garage refrigerators and freezers: clean them before summer. Garage heat can pass 115°F, which wears compressors out early.

Once a year

• Dryer vent: clear the whole duct, including the outside vent hood. A clogged vent is a common cause of dryers that overheat or don’t dry.
• Hoses: look at the washer supply hoses for bulges or cracks and replace worn ones.
• Dishwasher and ice maker: run a vinegar cycle and replace the refrigerator water filter on schedule, to fight hard-water scale.

When something seems off
