The short answer: a dryer with no response at all is usually a simple fault. The door switch and the thermal fuse are the first things to check.

What usually causes it
- Door switch not registering. The dryer won’t start unless it sees the door as closed.
- Blown thermal fuse. A safety fuse that cuts power completely after an overheating event.
- Tripped breaker or bad outlet. Electric dryers need 240 volts and can lose half the power while still seeming live.
- Worn start switch or timer. The button or contacts can wear out and stop sending the start signal.
- Failed motor start relay or capacitor. The motor can hum but not turn.
What you can check yourself
- Close the door firmly. The dryer won’t start unless the door switch registers it closed.
- Reset the breaker. Flip the double breaker fully off and on.
- Check the cord and outlet. Make sure the plug is fully seated and undamaged.
- Hold Start. Many models need it held for a second or two, and some have a child lock.
How to prevent it
- Close the door gently and don’t overload the drum.
- Keep the vent clear so the thermal fuse isn’t stressed.
