Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Turning
Likely causes
- ✓Jammed impeller from food debris or a foreign object
- ✓Tripped internal reset button
- ✓Worn or seized motor bearings
- ✓Stuck flywheel needing manual release with an Allen wrench
- ✓Failed motor capacitor
The short answer: a humming disposal has power, but something is blocking the blades. You can usually clear it by turning the flywheel with an Allen wrench.
Press the red reset button afterward.
What usually causes it
- Jammed flywheel or impeller. A bone, bottle cap or utensil can lock the blades.
- Tripped reset button. The motor overloads and shuts itself off.
- Stuck flywheel. Needs manual release with an Allen wrench.
- Worn motor bearings. The shaft binds and the motor hums.
- Failed capacitor. Some models won’t start the motor without it.
What you can check yourself
- Turn off the wall switch and never reach in. Use tongs or pliers to remove anything you can see.
- Turn the flywheel. Put the Allen wrench (usually 1/4 inch) in the socket under the unit and work it back and forth until it spins freely.
- Press the red reset button. It’s on the bottom. Wait a few minutes, then run cold water and try again.
How to prevent it
- Run cold water while the disposal is on.
- Avoid fibrous or hard items, such as bones, celery and pits.
- Don’t put grease or coffee grounds down the drain.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my disposal hum but not spin?
Something is blocking the blades or the motor is overloaded. Clearing the jam and pressing reset often fixes it.
Is it safe to use an Allen wrench?
Yes, with the wall switch off. Never put your hand into the disposal.
When should I replace it?
If the shaft is seized, the reset keeps tripping or it leaks, replacement may be better than repair.
