Microwave Not Heating

Likely causes

  • ✓Failed magnetron
  • ✓Blown high-voltage diode
  • ✓Faulty door interlock switch cutting power to the magnetron
  • ✓Failing high-voltage capacitor
  • ✓Worn or damaged waveguide cover

The short answer: if the light and turntable work but the food stays cold, the high-voltage parts have failed. The diode and the magnetron are the usual ones.

This is not a do-it-yourself repair.

What usually causes it

  • Failed magnetron. The part that generates the microwaves.
  • Blown high-voltage diode. One of the most common causes.
  • Faulty door interlock switch. Cuts power to the magnetron.
  • Failing high-voltage capacitor. Doesn’t supply the voltage the magnetron needs.
  • Damaged waveguide cover. Burned or pitted covers cause arcing and weak heating.

What you can check yourself

  • Test with water. Heat a cup of water for a minute or two; if it stays cold, the heating circuit has failed.
  • Check the power level. A forgotten 10% setting looks like no heat.
  • Close the door firmly. If it doesn’t register closed, the light and turntable may work with no heat.
  • Reset the power. Unplug it for a minute or reset the breaker.

How to prevent it

  • Cover food to reduce splatter.
  • Wipe up spills promptly.
  • Never run it empty.

Frequently asked questions

My microwave runs but the food is cold. Why?

The heating circuit has failed. The light and turntable use separate, low-voltage parts.

Can I fix a microwave myself?

We don't recommend it. The capacitor holds a dangerous charge even when unplugged.

Is it worth repairing?

On higher-end and built-in models, usually. On low-cost countertop units, replacement can make more sense.
