Oven Not Heating

Likely causes

  • ✓Burned-out bake or broil element (electric ovens)
  • ✓Failed igniter not glowing hot enough to open the gas valve
  • ✓Faulty temperature sensor giving incorrect readings
  • ✓Failed control board
  • ✓Tripped thermal fuse or safety cutoff

The short answer: on electric ovens a burned-out bake element is the most common cause. On gas ovens it’s usually a weak igniter.

If the temperature is just inaccurate, a sensor is more likely.

What usually causes it

  • Burned-out bake or broil element. Common on electric ovens.
  • Weak igniter. Common on gas ovens.
  • Faulty temperature sensor. Gives wrong readings.
  • Failed control board. Less common than people assume.
  • Tripped thermal fuse. Cuts power to the heating circuit.

What you can check yourself

  • Check the settings. Confirm it’s on Bake, not Delay Start or a lock mode.
  • Check the breaker (electric ovens). Flip the double breaker fully off and on.
  • Look at the bake element. With the oven cool, a blister, break or burned spot means it needs replacing.
  • Gas ovens: an igniter that glows without lighting the burner is likely weak. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility.

How to prevent it

  • Avoid heavy spills on the element.
  • Don’t use abrasive cleaners on the sensor.
  • Run self-clean only when necessary.

When to call a technician

Call us if:

  • The element or igniter looks fine but there’s no heat
  • The oven heats but the temperature is wrong
  • You smell gas (leave and call your gas utility first)

These repairs involve live voltage, gas or hidden parts, so we recommend leaving them to a professional.
