What usually causes it

• Worn door boot seal (front-loaders). The rubber seal can tear, harden or trap debris.
• Loose or cracked supply hose. Leaks usually appear during filling.
• Failing pump hose or clamp. Leaks usually show up during drain or spin.
• Too much detergent. Heavy suds can push water out past seals.
• Cracked tub or worn bearing seal. A bigger repair, with a steady leak throughout the cycle.

What you can check yourself

• Note when it leaks. Fill points to the supply hoses, drain to the drain hose or pump, and all cycle long to the door seal or tub.
• Check the hoses. Hand-tighten loose connections and replace any bulging or cracked hose.
• Inspect the door boot (front-loaders). Look for tears, mold or a trapped sock.
• Use the right detergent amount. HE machines need HE detergent.

How to prevent it

• Replace supply hoses every few years.
• Use HE detergent and measure it.
• Wipe the door boot and leave the door ajar after washing.
