Washer Won't Start or Turn On
Likely causes
- ✓Door or lid switch not registering as closed
- ✓Tripped circuit breaker or blown thermal fuse
- ✓Water supply valves closed, holding the cycle from starting
- ✓Worn start switch or timer
- ✓Failed control board or motor start capacitor
Before anything else, we check the door or lid switch — on most machines the control board won’t start a cycle unless it sees the door signal as closed, and a worn or misaligned switch is the single most common reason a washer looks completely dead. A tripped breaker or closed water valve causes the same symptom and takes seconds to rule out.
If power and water are both confirmed and the door switch checks out, the next suspects are the start switch, timer, or control board. We test each component with a meter rather than swapping parts on a guess, since control boards are one of the more expensive parts to replace unnecessarily.
