The evaporator fan is not working as expected. This fan moves cold air around the refrigerator, so cooling problems often follow.

What to check before calling

• ✓Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan — if the fridge is silent inside, the fan has likely stopped.
• ✓If frost buildup is visible around the back panel, a 24-hour manual defrost can sometimes clear it; if the code returns, the fan motor needs replacing.
• ✓Listen for the fan inside the freezer when the door is open and the switch is pressed.
• ✓Check for heavy frost on the freezer back wall that may be jamming the fan.

When to call a technician

If the fan is silent or frosted over, the motor or the defrost system needs repair.
