What causes it

What it means in practice
The washer doesn't think the door is closed and locked, so it won't start or continue. A bit of laundry caught in the door is the easiest explanation, but a worn latch or lock can cause the same thing.
What to check before calling
- ✓Open and firmly reclose the door until it clicks.
- ✓Check for anything obstructing the door latch.
- ✓Open the door, make sure no clothing is caught in the seal, and close it firmly until it clicks.
- ✓Look at the latch and the door lock area for dirt or damage.
When to call a technician
If the door closes properly but the code stays, the door lock assembly probably needs replacing.
